When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back. (logline)

I missed You’re Next during its theater run so I saw it on BluRay at a friend’s house one night. There was instant Horror love for this movie. We stood outside talking about this film and others like it for hours. You’re Next is a horror fans movie. At the premiere, director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett said, “We made this movie with the purpose of not making you feel like a horrible person when it ends. We want people to have fun with it. We made it entirely with the audience in mind.” If pleasing an audience is what they set out to do, they succeeded. The film plays with the genre enough that it is not meaning to be taken serious, it’s not trying to be the new standard for scary. But it’s a lot of fun. It delivers scares, laughs, action, and a feeling of, I’ve been here before and I remember why I like coming here.

youre next posterYou’re Next is a skilled exercise in the horror tropes, playing with them and making them fun all over again. The movie is full of inside jokes between the filmmakers and the fans. And let’s face it boys and girls, the masks are really cool.

The main character, Erin (Sharni Vinson) starts the film as any girl next door going to meet the parents of her fiancé. Soon, once the stuff starts to fly, she proves to be way more capable than most Survivor Girls in other Slasher Films of this type. At first, you’re tempted to roll your eyes and say, Oh Come on! Really! How did she know to do that? But trust the filmmakers on this one, they have a great answer for you who watch till the end.

I don’t want to give away anything and that makes it hard to get into detail on the richness this film brings for long time horror fans—slasher fans, especially. So let me suggest this, one night, have some friends over, make some popcorn, turn down the lights, and watch You’re Next. Have fun with it, let it creep you out, spook you, and make you laugh. And when it’s over, get out your white goat mask, sneak outside, and beat on the window and scare the shit out of your friends…
